Whitehaven Clinic ™ Gambling Recovery Treatment (GRT) Program

GAMBLING ADDICTION RECOVERY PROGRAM, FIND OUT HOW WE CAN HELP YOU TURN THINGS AROUND.

When someone has a gambling addiction, it can be challenging to know where to start to get help. The nature of problematic gambling is that it can destroy a person’s financial stability, their credit rating, and their self-esteem creating massive stress and a self-perpetuating cycle. Often there’s a trial of loans and debts and broken relationships in their wake in response to their attempts to rectify their situation.

Like any addicts’ behaviours, family and friends can unknowingly continue enabling the gambler by continuing to “bail them out just one last time.” The reason this doesn’t work is that nothing has changed other than providing the gambler with the breathing space to start the cycle all over again – and become more clandestine each time.

Every gambling addict is desperate to address the financial bind that they find themselves in – and what is the quickest way to resolve the issue? Well, by gambling of course! And so the cycle continues. Meanwhile their mental and emotional health is suffering as they become increasingly desperate for resolution.

The Whitehaven Clinic’s Gambling Recovery Treatment (GRT) Program is a structured program focusing on addressing the underlying root cause of addictive behaviours. It addresses the reasons for the addiction of choice, and works with the client to develop strategies to eliminate gambling addiction behaviours. Our program is unique in that we look at the client’s treatment requirements, and an individual treatment plan is developed. You then work with your program facilitator one-on-one through to completion of your program.

The goal of the Gambling Recovery Process Treatment Program is for participants to develop long-term sustainable behavioural change. The focus of the program is for participants to understand the underlying root cause of their gambling and “why I do what I do”. This provides self-knowledge and self-empowerment to develop better quality strategies moving forward.

Step 1 – Assessing Your Treatment Needs

As part of our intake process, the first step is to organise an Initial Assessment where we meet with you to determine your current situation, treatment requirements and readiness for change.

  • At the end of your initial assessment, you will have:
  • An understanding of why you are gambling;
  • A high-level understanding of the underlying personality issues and triggers contributing to your problematic gambling;
  • An overview of your treatment plan.

The initial assessment is an integral part of setting up the treatment process. During the assessment, our Program Director will be speaking with you to determine your suitability for the program, your readiness for change, as well as determining your personality type and underlying personality-based triggers contributing to your gambling.

All information gathered during the initial assessment is incorporated into the treatment plan which forms the basis of the program sessions going forward.

You will be given homework straight after the session looking at your own personality type in preparation for session one.

Step 2 – The Treatment Process

The GRP Treatment Program consists of a number of one-on-one individualised sessions to work through presenting issues. Our focus on identifying the underlying root cause of addictive behaviours means that you will understand and address your core drivers, providing insight into what you do what you do – and most importantly, what to do instead of. This helps with better decision making and behavioural outcomes and consequences.

  • Dependant on treatment needs, your program will consist of 6 – 8 weeks treatment, with several reassessment points before exit;
  • All session times are confirmed at the start of your program and consist of three sessions per week for the first three weeks. We then conduct a review of your treatment gains before deciding whether to reduce down sessions for subsequent weeks;
  • If you wish to have your family or partner also involved in understanding how to best support you moving forward, we can also incorporate this into your program. We have a partner/family specific program providing a minimum of 12 hours of intensive one-on-one contact with a qualified therapist specialising in addiction recovery (can be extended depending on treatment needs);
